Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF)

This is a qualification that prepares learners for further learning or training and/or develop knowledge and/or skills in a subject area

The QNUK Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF) qualification is ideal for those working in an early year’s environment

This qualification covers:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
  • Be able to assess an emergency situation safely
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
  • Understand how to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
  • Understand how to provide first aid to an infant and a child with anaphylaxis
  • Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with injuries to bones, joints and muscles Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with head and spinal injuries
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
  • Understand how to administer emergency first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat or cold
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with minor injuries
  • Understand how to complete records relating to illnesses, injuries and emergencies

This qualification comprises of two mandatory units. The learning outcomes and assessment criteria are outlined in this document.

This qualification is a two-day course.

This qualification is assessed by 2 multiple choice question papers, practical observations and verbal questioning.

This qualification is assessed by a 15 question multiple-choice question paper and a 30 multiple choice question paper.

Successful learners must achieve a score of at least 10 out of 15 in paper 1 and 20 out of 30 in paper.

The duration of the assessment is 30 minutes and 60 minutes consecutively.

Successful candidates must competently complete the practical elements and demonstrate good knowledge in the verbal questioning assessments.

Assessors will use the practical assessment record to record the outcome of practical assessments and verbal questions.

Finally assessors will clearly record the overall outcome of the assessment on the cohort register.

Assessment records will be retained by the centre for verification purposes.

It is recommended that learners have a minimum of Level 1 literacy or equivalent.

This qualification is for those over 16 years of age.

All learners must be able to perform practical elements such as CPR on the ground.

There are no other pre-requisites for this qualification.

Learners successfully achieving this qualification may wish to progress to:

  • Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of an AED and CPR (QCF)
  • Level 2 Award in Activity First Aid (QCF)
  • Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF)
